Archivist Notes

Full name: Yousef Maher Yousef Dawwas | يوسف ماهر يوسف دواس

He was contributors for Palestine Chronicle and an active member of the "We Are Not Numbers" project launched by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor in early 2015 to document the suffering of the Palestinian people under occupation.

Yousef Dawas was a young Palestinian writer, musician, and cultural activist from Gaza. He wrote in English and was active with the initiative “We Are Not Numbers,” which documented Palestinian experiences beyond statistics. In his essays, he reflected on life under occupation and the destruction of his family’s orchard.

On 14 October 2023, he was killed along with 27 family members when an Israeli missile strike hit his family’s home in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza. His death has been mourned by Palestinian and Arab writers and cultural networks.

Dawas had written about daily life in Gaza, including a poignant article titled “Who will pay for the 20 years we lost?” and another about a Palestinian couple’s struggle for medical care — showing his ability to capture both human experience and the broader impact of conflict

Palestinian and Arab writers and intellectuals mourned the deceased, as well as his friends who knew him and worked closely with him. The Tamer Educational Foundation also pointed out, through its Facebook account, that the deceased was an active member of the youth literary groups sponsored by the Foundation in Gaza: "Fears" and "Voices from Palestine".
